An epidemic of tonsillitis has been hitting grown folks and children alike.
Boys and girls got their first skating last Friday—and it was gone Saturday.
Scores of deer hunters went through town the past week to the deer woods and back.
Vernon Sutton has started to put in the frame for a second bungalow on Park Street, adjoining his home. He has just completed one.
1922 calendars and almanacs are in demand. Not so many are put out as in the palmy days “before the war.”
H.J. Faby has bought the George Raynor place on the north side; also part of the Holzapple place. Mr. Raynor will carry on his poultry business at the Rogers farm, on the Freehold road, which he recently bought; the Holzapples have gone to Brooklyn.
P.L. Grover, as executor, and D.O. Parker, as auctioneer, sold the personal belongings of C.A. Meinikheim last Saturday afternoon. His violin was sold for $55 [$854 in 2021 dollars] to Mrs. B.G. Meinikheim. Other articles brought fair prices. All of Mr. Meinikheim's books have been placed in the public library by terms of the will.
An entire new planing mill and wash mill outfit has been installed at the Newbury yards, in the big hollow tile building fronting on South Main Street. The machines are all electrically driven and were set up by the H.B. Smith Co., of Smithville, N.J. The man in charge of installing them was Mr. Rutler, who married Miss Robinson, of Toms River, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ephraim Robinson, now of Duckabush, Washington State.
School closes today and will reopen January 3. Teachers living out of town will go home for the holidays.
Wild fowl shooting has the gunners all to itself now, except the fox hunters. Deer shooting and upland gunning are both a thing of the past.
One of the results of the war is a tremendous crop of electricians and automobile mechanics. This town seems to have its share of both.
Business people on Main Street, between Main and Water Streets, seem to favor the idea of paving the entire street with concrete from curb to curb.
The Toms River Amusement Company is completing its sixth house on Irons Street, built in the past year. Also a concrete sidewalk is being laid in front of the entire block of houses.
Louis Davis, of Sunapee, N.H., has bought from Walter Johnson the American market in the American Supply Co. block on lower Main Street, and too possession the first of this week.
Sunrise at 7:23; sunset at 4:37, making the day nine hours and 15 minutes long. The sun is now setting five minutes later that it did two weeks ago, the day having lengthened that much in the afternoon. It still rises a little later each morning for another week, till it reaches 7:24.
A White steamer fire engine was brought here on Friday last and gave a demonstration of its powerful pumps from the Main Street bridge. It pumped direct from the river or from the fire hydrants, and surely did throw a powerful stream. One of the party who brought it here was Mercer Baird, formerly owner and manager of the Baldwin Hotel, at Beach Haven.
Santa Claus is scheduled to visit the Electric Store on Water Street on Monday morning next, and give the electric train that runs in the store window to some Toms River boy. While only one train will be given away, a box of candy will be provided for each boy.
See Santa Claus in front of the post office tonight.
Those state troopers look businesslike and hard as nails.
The big Christmas tree will bloom tomorrow night on the Court House green.
Santa Claus will remember the little folks at the Court House tomorrow evening.
The High School pupils gave a dance in honor of the football eleven last evening (December 22) at the Ocean House.
Lots of folks are feasting on venison this week. The Courier man acknowledge a fine roast, as a gift from J.E. Abbott, the State Fire Warden.
The Toms River High School Alumni Association are planning a dinner at the Ocean House on December 22, with the idea of reviving that association.
The night train on Wednesday from New York had a midhap at Lakehurst. The last car jumped the track and also the rear truck of the next car. It was said one of the rails broke and allowed the cars to leave the track.
The Freeholders suggest that if Dover Township wants to pave Main Street from curb to curb, it could possibly make arrangements with the State Highway Commission for enough of the $600,000 allowed this county for reimbursement to cove the cost of the job. That would mean the street would all be concrete, instead of twenty feet of concrete in the center, and that the township would only have the interest on the cost to pay for a period of perhaps four years.
Townships and boroughs reorganize on January 2.
Main Street was patched on Wednesday with gravel.
Young Allen Attison has killed a deer two years in succession. Some of the veterans are unable to make such a boast.
Louis Davis, who has just bought out the American Market, announces he will run an express route to and from Philadelphia.
Mme. Lillie, who has been the past month at the Vanitie Shop on Washington Street, leaves next Monday for Miami, Fla., for the winter.
Charles Evans suggests that before a concrete road is laid through Berkeley the double curve should be straightened out as far as possible.
Many of the stores have been open evenings this week, and will continue to be open tonight and tomorrow night for the benefit of Christmas shoppers.
Toms River Gun Club will hold a shoot on Monday next, December 26. Prizes will be of the good old-fashioned kind—turkeys, geese and ducks, etc.
Dr. Paul Goble is refitting the Goble dental rooms on Main Street, and will reopen them next Tuesday. He will then have his offices open every weekday except Monday. He succeeds his father, Dr. Leon Goble, who has been practicing dentistry more than thirty-five years in Toms River and Pemberton.
No show at the Traco Wednesday night—films failed to come.
Boys and girls are hoping for skating or snow during the holiday week.
The post office has been a busy place this week, and no let-up in sight till Monday.
Jack Frost put ice on the windows Thursday morning for the first time this season.
Even those who shop out of town are glad to have the village stores handy for their last minute buying.
Toms River merchants seem to be getting a find Christmas trade. Some say it is about the best they ever had.
Sales of candy have increased wonderfully, whether because of prohibition or higher wages, deponent saith not.
The Mathis laboratory is a very busy place these days, rushing out orders all the time. Next to Steiner's, it is the largest employer of labor in the village.
Thursday was the first day of winter, according to the almanac, and it lived up to all its privileges, being the coldest day so far, with the mercury pretty close to the zero mark.
The Christmas club checks are a big help to Christmas shopping.
The High School issued the second number of the Cedar Chest for this year on Tuesday. It contained 32 well filled pages, beside a Christmassy looking red cover. In it was a picture of the staff of boys and girls who get out the book, with their “coach,” Miss Sally Thompson. There were also Christmas stories by Margaret Malsch, Island Heights; Alice Staton, Beachwood; Harold Woolly and Johanna Wells, Toms River; Katharine Dorwart, Lanoka. Also poems by Katharine Dorwart; Kathryn Shuts, Emily Sever and Rhoda Berrien. William Bell and Frederick Milford are now business managers.

T.R.Y.C. DRIVE PROGRESSES
Twenty-three new names were added to the roll of the Toms River Yacht Club on Friday evening last, in the drive to increase membership and (with a large membership as a basis) keep the club house open the year round. The new names are: H.H. Dittmar, Rulief F. Clayton, Charles B. Grover, Paul B. Grover, Roy L. Lower, Roland W. Bell, Leroy King, Leo McClenahan, George Wissmach, John F. Bills, Clayton G. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HAS STUNT FOR SANTA CLAUS
Our old friend Santa Claus seems to be working overtime in Toms River village this year. Leonard Clark has given him a job at the Electric Store, Water Street, Monday morning; the Firemen have him engaged for the Court House on Saturday evening; the Degree of Pocahontas will take him around with them to a number of houses where he apparently doesn't know the way himself—all this in addition to the regular Christmas eve business, in private homes. Then the Chamber of Commerce have planned a job for him. The merchants of Toms River are each to give away a gift to somebody this Friday evening from their stores. Old Santa is to patrol the streets and superintend the giving. Wherever you see a card in a window you may know a present is to be handed out this evening.
There are thirty-five business men in town who have agreed to give prizes. No one person can receive more than one prize. The prizes have been limited in value to two or three dollars each [$31 to $46 in 2021 dollars] but everyone of the 35 will be worth having.
The idea of the Chamber of Commerce was to work up co-operation among the merchants. It will be followed up with an effort for a monthly bargain day, dollar day, or something of that kind, in the effort to bring Toms River the business that naturally belongs to Toms River merchants.

THIS WAS BANNER YEAR FOR JERSEY CRANBERRY GROWERS
This has been a banner year for most of the New Jersey growers of cranberries. The crop was fairly good in the state, and poor elsewhere, resulting in high prices. Most growers have been able this year to cancel the loses they had incurred in several years past, during war times, when the lack of sugar made the sale of cranberries slow, and returns poor. Some growers say they have paid off notes they had carried since the falls of 1917 and 1918...
Nature was good to the Jersey cranberry men this fall in giving them ideal weather for the harvest and letting them get the berries off without loss from frost. The market was good to them also, as it has absorbed practically the whole crop before Christmas, at prices ranging from $12 per barrel for ordinary Jersey stock up to $15 and more for fancy fruit [$186 to $232 in 2021 dollars]. A good many growers are wondering if losses in previous years can be in any way allowed to balance their surtaxes and excess profit taxes that otherwise will be going to Uncle Sam for this year's crop.
This year the smallest and greenest fruit, if sound, instead of being discarded, was barreled up and shipped to the near-by cities as pie berries and brought as much as first-class fruit often has brought in other years.
The lack of all fruit for canning purposes in the eastern half of the country all during the summer, because of the late freezes last spring, and the scarcity of apples, from the same reason, combined with a short crop of Cape Cod cranberries, made these good prices for the Jersey grower.

VILLAGE CHRISTMAS TREE AND CHRISTMAS PROGRAM
Plans are completed for the village Christmas tree in the Court House yard, and for the village Christmas service, which will be held at 7 P.M. tomorrow, December 24, at the Court House. The tree will be lighted up at that hour on Christmas even, and will be lighted every night until and including Monday, January 2, 1922. Superintendent Case, of the Electric Company, promises that he will try out another large light at the top of the tree, like the one that last year was popularly called “the Star of Bethlehem.” The tree selected is the big ornamental spruce at the southwest entrance to the Court House grounds.
The program for the village service was prepared by the Pastors' Union, and is as follows:

Invocation and Lord's Prayer—Rev. I.S. Hankins.

Rev. R.S. Nichols will be the chairman of the meeting, and Rev. I.E. Hicks will direct the singing. The hour is set to 7 to 8, so as to leave the evening free for the many things that most folks have to do on Christmas eve. This will be the fourth year of the village tree and village service at the Court House, and in previous years the services has been both impressive and well attended. Last year the court room was crowded and people were standing.

BAY HEAD MAYOR NOT HELD FOR SHOOTING DRUNKEN MAN
So far as can be learned the December grand jury, at its session on Wednesday of this week, failed to find a bill against Mayor R.H. Metcalfe, of Bay Head Borough, or his special officer, Samuel Bonnell, for the killing of Aldur Anderson, a Swede fisherman, at Bay Head, on the night of October 22 last...

INSURANCE ON BURIED CAR IS HELD UP BY COMPANY
So far it is understood that the Liverpool, London and Globe Insurance Company, which had issued a policy on the Oakland car, found buried in the sand out of sight, near Schenck;s Mills, has not paid the insurance. The car was insured in the name of William Stevenson, a policy being taken out for $700 [$10,869 in 2021 dollars] on April 30, 1921, at which time the car was said to have been bought in 1920 for $1200 [$18,633 in 2021 dollars]. Stevenson recently filed an application for the payment of the policy, alleging that he parked his car in front of a bakery, at Front and Jackson Streets, Trenton, while shopping, about 6:50 o'clock, October 29 last, and when he went for it the car had been stolen. The car is still at the county jail. The big puzzle in the whole matter is why anyone who stole a Lakehurst car in Trenton should bring it back home to bury it.

APPLES AND CRANBERRIES
The old saw has it that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. The late Sheriff, Charles L. Holman, used to say that a handful of cranberries a day was as good as the proverbial apple, and he and other old-time cranberry men would carry a pocketful of cranberries with them and eat them from time to time as they would as apple or peanuts. This is brought to mind by a copy of the Clinton (N.J.) Democrat, sent to the Courier by Prof. E.L. Hellman, now of Clinton, formerly of Toms River, which suggests the cranberry as a preventive of the grip.
The cranberry cultivation, by the way, began not to supply the demand for a table sauce, but rather the demand for an antidote to scurvy. Before the Civil War, the Arctic whalers took most of the cranberry crop, paying as high at times as $50 a barrel, when a dollar was worth four times as much as it is now [which would come out to $3,100 in 2021 dollars per barrel of cranberries]. They did not know what vitamines were in those days, but they did know that the cranberry would ward off scurvy, the dread disease of the meat eater in the high latitudes.

OYSTER/CLAM WAR OFFENDER RELEASED ON PAROLE
Jonathan Parker, of Parkertown, convicted of taking oysters, or clams, from other than clamming ground in Tuckerton Bay, and who was sentenced from eighteen months to three years in state prison [was released on parole].
“Jonty” Parker is well known in all the lower end of the county. He has at various times caused considerable trouble to the neighborhood and to the law officers of the county. He was one of the principals in the oyster-clam war in that section.

MILLION GALLON WELL SUNK AT TOMS RIVER WATER PLANT
The new well at the Toms River Water Company plant, up Lakehurst road, was tested out on Monday, December 9, and yielded at the rate of above 710 gallons a minute, or somewhat over a million gallons in twenty-four hours...
The new well gives ample water for the growing town of Toms River, and indeed more than doubles the present pumpage supply from the four old wells... The water in this well must receive the O.K. Of the State Board before it can be run in the mains for use by the public...

MAY ABANDON CAMP DIX
Orders have been issued by the War Department for the transfer of the entire organization now at Camp Dix to Camp Meade, Md., the movement to be completed not later than April 18 of next year. Because of lack of funds for rail transportation the War Department has ordered that the entire division shall march to Camp Meade. There are about 5700 men in the division. Major General Charles T. Menoher is the present commander, having succeeded Major General David C. Shanks in October. Recognizing that this order means the virtual abandonment of Camp Dix, Senators Edge and Frelinghuysen had a personal interview with Secretary of War Weeks, asking that this action be rescinded. The outcome will be watched with interest.

DEER HUNTER DIED FROM BUCK SHOT; HIT AT PASADENA
Henry Johnson, of Sunset Avenue, Red Bank, died late Saturday at the Paul Kimball Hospital, Lakewood, from a gunshot wound in the abdomen, received accidentally Friday while hunting for deer near Pasadena, Ocean County. In company with several other Red Bank men, including former councilman Daniel C. Woods, Walter Field, John Oakes, Jr., Walter Anderson, Charles Senien and Walter Walsh...
Johnson made a statement at the hospital before his death saying that his shooting was accidental and exonerating the man who is alleged to have done it, John Oakes... from all the blame. Johnson is said to have been a native of this section, and to have moved to Red Bank since he grew up.
The story as told by friends is that while walking through a heavily wooded section, Johnson was mistaken for a deer and the shot entered his abdomen, piercing the intestinal tract. He was put in an automobile by several of his friends and hurriedly removed to the Lakewood Hospital. The attending physician at first thought the wound was not serious but complications developed Saturday morning and he was operated on. A few hours later he suffered a relapse and died...
Mr. Johnson was 40 years old and was a mason contractor. He is survived by his wife, Susan Dressler, and a daughter, Alma.
Another story current in the deer woods said that one of Johnson's party crippled a deer. The whole party rushed in on the deer, firing, to make sure of killing it, and one of the buck shot hit Johnson.

IN THE DEER WOODS
J. Oscar Weaver, of Camden, was taken to Burlington County Hospital, at Mt. Holly, on Friday last, with a flesh wound in his arm, caused by gunshot from the gun of one of his hunting party. The wound was not serious and he went home after having it dressed.
Edward Holstein, of Monmouth Co., is reported to have been shot Friday, in back of Barnegat, but escaped serious injuries.
Joseph E. Abbott and son, with Winfield Irons, went to Atlantic City and spent four days gunning with a crowd of Abbott's old friends there. The party numbered twenty-two; the bucks killed numbered eight. Abbott says that nearly every doe seen this season in the woods was accompanied by two fawns, and the total number of deer seems to be much larger than last year.
Sheriff Joseph L. Holman says he had three good shots at deer during the season and failed to bring down the game either time. Two of his party, Ed Stokey and his son, both of Lakewood, each got a buck. They put up near Brookville.
The Toms River Gun Club is quite proud of its prowess in the deer woods, its members bringing in four bucks—Ralph Irons, Joe Tilton, Allen Attison, all of Berkeley, Toms River, and John A. Humphreys, of Brooklyn, a member of the club.
Parkertown boasts of five deer brought in by the hunters in that village. Capt. Tim Parker and Jay Parker were among the lucky ones.
Oscar Parker, of West Creek, on Tuesday morning, killed a big buck with one buckshot, that penetrated its spinal cord and broke its back, at 80 yards.
Spraguetown, near West Creek, bagged three deer—Ashton Morey, Israel Dunfee and Warren Pharo were the victorious hunters.
J. Goodrich Holmes, former County Collector, took home a big buck to Lakewood last week.
Freeholder Frank T. Hofman had a party of Whitesville men in the deer woods last week, and one of them, William B. Davis, bagged a fine buck.
While on a tour of the pines, Game Warden Charles C. Morton, of Mt. Holly, found the dead body of a four-prong buck deer wedged in an abandoned well near Paisley. The animal evidently had fallen into the hole, head down, and could not extricate itself.
Ralph Irons, Joseph Tilton and Allen Sever, three Berkeley lads, went out toward Davenport on Friday, and the first two each returned with a buck. One had eight times, the other five. Sever saw nine deer, but they were all too far off. He emptied his gun at one deer at long range, and missed; while he was putting shells in the gun, two more deer went right by him.
Jason Mason, of Lakehurst, came through town Friday afternoon with a seven spike buck on the front of his trusty Lizzie. The Lizzie, by the way, has made deer hunting possible for fully half of the hunters [Lizzie, or Tin Lizzie, being a nickname for old, cheap or dilapidated Model T Ford cars].
Raymond Horner, of West Grove, a former Ocean County boy, went back home to Cedar Run last Saturday and took back to Asbury Park a 225-pound buck. The Asbury Park Press vouches for that weight, the Courier does not; as it is a pretty big buck that will weight that much.
Game Wardon Morton, who was in the woods, says that he never saw so many deer gunners at one time.

DEER-HUNTING ACCIDENTS
Amputation of the foot will probably be necessary for Edmund Hayes, No. 2415 Mickle Street, Camden, as a result of injuries received while gunning for deer near Indian Mills, Saturday. He is at the Burlington County Hospital, Mt. Holly.
Hayes was with some men watching another man demonstrate the operation of a new kind of pump gun, when a shell exploded and the full load struck Hayes across the top of the foot, making a frightful injury. He says it was purely accidental and blames no one.
Another gunning victim is Edward Ingling, of Columbus. Hunting near Chatsworth, he thought it advantageous to climb a tree, and he did, pulling the gun up after him. A limb struck the hammer, a shell was discharged, and Ingling's fingers were blown off.

FOUND SIX SLAIN DOES
Game Warden J.H. Evernham, of Toms River, found six slain does during the season, four of them the first day. One bunch of hunters was found with a dead doe, those who killed the others being wise enough to leave them where they laid, when they found they had shot does instead of bucks. The party found with a doe came from Eatontown, and included Edward Feaster, Valentine Van Curen, Edward Covert, William Thorn and others.

AGED MAN KNOCKED DOWN AND ROBBED IN OWN SHOP
Knocked down by repeated blows on the head with a wooden mallet as he entered his cobbler shop at Seaside Park, last Monday evening, Henry Jones, an aged resident of that borough, was robbed of about $200 [$3,105 in 2021 dollars] by his assailant, and has three bad scalp wounds as his souvenir of this holdup. Howard Morgan, a lad of twenty, claiming his home in Philadelphia, was arrested by Borough Marshal Frank Sprague, as the hold-up man, and brought to county jail.
Jones had a shop in the Berkeley section of Seaside Park, and had lived there for some time past. Monday night, after dark, between 6 and 7 o;clock, he started in his shop. It was commonly known about Seaside Park that the old man carried a roll of money most of the time, instead of banking it. As he stepped in the shop he saw the form of a man, and the glare of a flashlight came into his eyes; he grappled with the assailant, but was beaten to his knees by a blow over the head. The man wore a mask, which he managed to tear from his face, getting a glimpse of his face by the light of the flash. The robber told the old man that if he made any alarm he would shoot him, and by repeated blows, knocked the aged cobbler unconscious. When he came to he had lost much blood from the scalp wounds, and $197 had been taken from his coat pocket, and $5 from a purse in his trouser's pocket.
Morgan denies that he is the man who did the job.

STOLEN FORD FOUND BY STATE TROOPER IN WOODS
Stripped and dismantled, a Ford touring car, belonging to Bert DeBow, of Jackson's Mills, and stolen from in front of the High School building, at Lakewood, on December 12, was located this week in the woods, or swamp, near Laurelton, by a state trooper. DeBow had left the car in front of the school while attending a mock trial entertainment held in the building.
As a result of the sleuthing of the trooper three arrests have been made. Herbert Kneeland, a young man around Lakewood, is in the county jail, charged with having sold parts from the Ford to Eddie Huss and Fred Clark, of Lakewood, both of whom were held under $800 bail as possible accessories.

CHICKEN HOUSE LIGHTS O.K.
To the Courier:
The lights in the chicken houses, spoken of recently in The Courier's Silverton letter, seem to have good results, as Mr. Blankenship, of Silverton, is getting 76 eggs per day from 127 chickens.

OTHER FOLK'S PROPERTY
To the Courier:
We wonder whether if it is not time we began to realize that to trespass on and destroy another man's property is not exactly conducive to “Peace on earth” and “Good-will toward man”? We all love to decorate our homes with the beautiful holly at this season of good-will, but how about the owner—it can hardly be pleasing to him to find the trees he has been so proud of ruthlessly laid low and hacked to pieces, their beauty destroyed for all time, in order that some home may look pretty for perhaps a week. Let us at least have the courtesy to ask permission before we appropriate and carry off another's private property.

DOVER TOWNSHIP SCHOOL NOTES
The Alumni of the High School will hold a supper and dance at the Ocean House [which stood on the northwest corner of Main and Water streets, where the 7-11 and now-vacant Chase Bank are today] on next Wednesday evening, at 7 o'clock. An effort has been made to reach each alumnus individually.
A dance in honor of the football team was held at the Ocean House last night. Twenty-five couples had an unusually pleasant evening.
School closes today for the holidays and will reopen on Wednesday, January 4.
The Kitchen Club continues to be filled to capacity each noon. In spite of the fact that no fish costs more than ten cents and that most of the pupils bring their own sandwiches, the sales average six dollars a day. Many who would like to take advantage of the hot lunch are kept away because of crowded conditions.
The squad for this week has included Dorothy Beckman, Lena Mannschreck, Evelyn Johnson, Elizabeth Neuman and Doris Chamberlain.
At the last meeting of the Home and School Association decided not only to complete the payment for the movie machine, but to assume the cost of installing and maintaining it for the year as well. To help defray these expenses a second benefit will be held in the Opera House on January 6. Each member of the Association will be asked to dispose of ten tickets.

FISH AND GAME
J. William Phillips, of Verona, recently made a successful gunning trip on Barnegat Bay, returning with a nice bag of ducks. He proposes repeating the trip.
S. Roy Smith, of Newark, has been at Forked River duck shooting.
The Newark Sunday Call says that: “The State of Louisiana has solved the much-mooted question of personal rights or public rights relating to wild water fowl. Here in New Jersey we are on the verge of serious trouble between sportsmen seeking a few hours' pleasure and reputed riparian owners along Barnegat Bay, while Governor Parker, of Louisiana, is receiving the praise of thousands of sportsmen for having set aside a public preserve, 60,000 acres of the finest duck hunting points in the country, where a fee of $1 any gunner can enjoy his sport without being molested. The property belongs to the state, and Governor Parker and Commissioner Alexander are having a commodious club house erected where accommodations at cost can be had all through the gunning season.”
Samuel H. Johnson and Herbert Woodruff returned to Newark last week from Seaside Park with a fine bag of water fowl. They had fourteen ducks, two geese and three large brant as a result of a two days' shoot. They found the weather cold in the early morning, but they are well used to this and will make another trip before the season closes.
The general run pheasants this year have been remarkable for their beautiful plumage. Many hunters have had their birds mounted and hundreds of tail feathers now adorn hats.

PERSONAL
Capt. Charles Hugh McLellan, formerly of the U.S. Coast Guards, now retired, who spent the summer at Boothbay Harbor, Me., and the fall at Newburyport, Mass., was in Toms River for a brief stay recently. He has now gone to Baltimore, Md., for a lengthy stay.
Edward Crabbe, Jr., and Franklin Doane are home from Princeton for the holidays.
Daniel M. Crabbe and Birkbeck Crabbe returned last week from the Berkshire School, Sheffield, Mass., to spend the Christmas holidays here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Crabbe.
Supreme Court Justice James F. Minturn spent a few days here the latter part of the week, enjoying the long walks in the woods and fields of which he is fond.
Capt. Clifford M. Elwell, U.S.A., now stationed as instructor in military strategy and tactics at the University of Pittsburgh, Pa., is spending a week at his home here. The University of Pittsburgh has an enrollment of 6000 and more than 400 are in the R.O.T.C.
Miss Ida Robinson, formerly of Toms River, is now at Calexico, Cal., and writes that it is a real border town. This half is in California and half in Mexico.
The Asbury Park Daily Press, of December 20 contained a picture and life history of Andrew Lincoln Lyons, who that day celebrated his 81st birthday in that city. Mr. Lyon's biography told of his teaching school at Cedar Creek (now Lanoka) and Potter's Creek (now Bayville) in this county, in 1866.

TOWN LIFE

BARNEGAT
Christmas is here! New Year's and January will soon slip away; February, short month, and would you believe it, spring is already here. At least, that is the way we try to look at it instead of counting the long, dreary weeks, telling of the old-fashioned winters when we were boys; predicting a long, cold winter, and all sorts of pessimistic views, that only augment our cold and misery that one must endure living in this section. Long or short, June will be here, when the schools close, and many scholars, after a hard winter's school work, will look around for some sort of vacation or recreation trip to rest their mind and at the same time gain a great deal of useful, practical information connected with the things they have learned from books regarding our country's history...
The coasting trade with sailing craft is almost a thing of the past. There are several reasons that can be blamed for it. Steam craft and barges have been the greatest factors, and another thing that has helped drive the schooners off the seas is the drastic laws made by some of the landsmen who had an idea the sailor was a very much abused man. There were some things that could be remedied, but once it started there was no limit until the sailor  could dominate the whole merchant marine. Just what they should eat, how much, certain kinds of beds, certain times for work, exorbitant wages, union laws for everything; an officer must not speak a cross word, and in fact do as they please until a captain had little or no control of his ship. Landsmen, who never had any dealings with sailors, are always loud in their condemnation of officers of ships, but if they could be placed in command of a ship, with a crew of average sailors, it is a sure thing that he would be a changed man...

BEACH HAVEN
Mr. and Mrs. Jed Sprague called last week for Liverpool. They will spend the winter visiting relatives in Cullen Castle, Ireland, and sight-seeing in that part of the world.
Leonard Steel, one of the engineers of the ice plant, went home to North Carolina and came back with a bride the other day. The happy couple have rented Mrs. Mathis' bungalow.
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gifford, Mrs. Helen King and Mrs. M.A. Stratton took a nice trip on Sunday, motoring to Barnegat and out the new road to Warren Grove and the Culvert Club. They did not go deer hunting but saw three nice bucks which had been shot the day before, also a baby fawn which had fallen exhausted on the road and been rescued by the caretakers at the club.
The stork visited the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harp last Saturday and left a baby girl. Mr. Harp is one of the engineers at the ice and cold storage plant. Mother and daughter are doing fine.
The school children are campaigning the borough selling Red Cross Christmas stamps.

BEACHWOOD
Mrs. Ruh has closed her bungalow and goes to Brooklyn for the winter.
The first winter meeting of the Beachwood Women's Club for 1922 is scheduled for the afternoon of January 5, at Hotel Astor, New York city. The afternoon will be devoted to cards and members are to bring guests. Mrs. B. Forsythe, Ridgefield, N.J. is to be chairman for the day.

FORKED RIVER
Report says that Marcus Brown and Henry Krauss shot deer on the last day of the season.
Elwood Archer is home from a visit to Brown's Mills.
Harrison Sanders, of Whitebogs, has been calling on friends here.
The Central Railroad is making repairs at the depot here.
Capt. A.G. Wilbert sends word home of his arrival in his yacht at Miami, Fla.
The foundations are in for W.B. Penn's new house.
Mr. and Mrs. Oscar S. Wilbert are home from a stay in Philadelphia, and on Sunday last they motored to the new inlet below Beach Haven.
Capt. Joseph Peckworth has been appointed Township Clerk in place of A.E. Bunnell, who has gone on a trip to Florida as master of a power yacht.
Ernest Napler, head of the Fish and Game Commission, has been spending some time at the Game Farm.
F.O. Briggs will hold a dance at the Greyhound Inn on Christmas eve.
Dillon J. Wilbert, of Toms River, went deer hunting with Joe Smires.
The Newark Call says: “Adam Hebeler has closed up his establishment at Forked River, painted it and generally overhauled it, including his three boats, and made everything ready for next season. On Thursday he started for West Miami to look the fishing conditions over there and elsewhere on the Florida coast, and perhaps put in some time in the industry.  He will also give considerable attention to another line of business in which he is interested while in Florida. He declares that the Barnegat season that ended a short time ago was the best since he has been located there and actively engaged in conducting fishing parties to the grounds where the best catches can be made. Toward the end of the weakfish season most of his patrons agreed on night fishing as best and the results obtained substantiated their belief. In the late striped bass season his boats returned good catches and throughout the season he also recorded splendid catches in flounders. He will be back from Florida in March and ready for the accommodation of his friends at the earliest appearance of fish with a desire to take bait.

ISLAND HEIGHTS
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Dilley motored from Germantown, Pa., and spent the week end on their boat, the Kit-n-Kat.
Mrs. August Cuppers is up and around again after a sharp attack of the measles.
Talk about fine weather: you can't beat the Heights for that. Why last Saturday was so fine one of our residents went in bathing in the river.
Lester Ayres presented our new library with seventy-five books last week and Mrs. Alley Ayres presented them with one hundred volumes even, giving a book-case and several other things; and I think a vote of thanks is due both.
Well, here's a Merry Christmas to everyone and may we all live till we die.

LANOKA
Captain George Chamberlain caught a young fox recently. It seems to be as tame as a kitten; a very beautiful creature. They say it is about the fifth or sixth George has caught.

OCEAN GATE
Quite a number of families are staying here this winter, the winter through and seem to be enjoying it.

SEASIDE HEIGHTS
John Throckmorton, a summer resident here, died December 8, at his home in Mt. Holly, in his 81st year. He had been a man of importance in Mt. Holly, and was a veteran of the Civil War. The funeral was one of the largest ever held in Mt. Holly, being attended by the Grand Army and other lodges. He leaves three children, seventeen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
A card party was given last Friday evening by Mrs. William M. Atkinson, at Lansdowne, Pa., in the interest of the local yacht club.
A.W. Driver is now raising pigeons.
Mrs. Hughes, of Darby, Pa., has rented the Stanger cottage for the next summer.
School children sold quite a number of Christmas seals for the Anti-Tuberculosis League of the state.
Our men have all been off deer hunting, as usual.
The Freeholders have had the Beach road scraped and repaired.

SEASIDE PARK
A large group of men from the town made a camp near Pasadena, N.J., for the week that the law gives for deer hunting and it is supposed they will return with their usual killing of fine bucks.

SILVERTON
A cow belonging to Samuel Dunham recently gave birth to twin calves, both alive and normal.
The pansies mentioned in a recent issue of The Courier that were blooming out in the open in Theo. Irons' front yard have not ceased to bloom as yet, although they are getting fewer in number.
Mrs. Cornelius Irons gets about the house a little now by pushing a chair ahead of her. Even that way of walking is better than sitting in the chair and not walk at all.
Hamilton Tilton returned safe and not much worse for wear last Sunday A.M. from a deer hunt in Retreat woods, where he with a party of Mt. Holly friends camped the first two days of the deer hunting season. They killed five bucks. Ham says they saw as many as fifty but they are hard to get.
